Here’s a pic of Katie signing chapter 12 of Jonathan Mooney’s new book The Short Bus, A Journey Beyond Normal at Otterbein college on Sunday. The chapter is titled “Katie’s Book of Life,” and its about guess who – Katie Basford, my daughter. One of the most beloved parts of the entire book is Jonathan’s insight gained during a kitchen table card game. According to Jonathan, it was the longest hand of crazy eights in history (I can vouch for that). It was Katie’s game, he wrote, because she is a master at it. Here’s an excerpt:
“At one point, Katie put her cards down, adjusted her glasses, and said, ‘I love this. I love being here with you guys.’ This was Katie – her presence like a conduit shifting energy, changing currents, plugging us in together. Buddhists believe the self is essentially whole only when intertwined with each other. I don’t know what time this hand of crazy eights ended. What I do know is because of Katie, no one was left out, no one won, no one lost, no one cared, and we were all more ourselves than we were before the game.”
What an incredible insight into the power of our presence and participation. Thanks Jonathan.
