Southern State Community College in Fincastle, Ohio is hosting an exhibit of my mixed media paintings starting today, April 1 through June 15. Two receptions are scheduled, one on Wednesday, April 16 from 6-8 p.m. and the second on Thursday, April 17 from 2-4 p.m. These events are free and open to the public.

I first became interested in art during my graduate studies in adult education at Antioch McGregor. That’s when I came to the conclusion that a major key to learning and social change is our ability to express and understand our experiences. In a sense, we have to speak the truth to our own experiences. But first, we have to strip away learned assumptions. The dominant culture has a hold on all of us.

By most people’s interpretations, my art is abstract, although I perceive the images as realistic because they are rooted in experience. My work has been featured in Language Arts Journal, in Akron Life and Leisure, and in my book “We Dance Together, A Painted Essay About my Education with Katie.”

I’ve titled the exhibit “Art Speaks” for reasons mentioned but also because I want to invite the public and students to make art and express their experiences. Southern State has kindly purchased art materials and made them available in the library. Please stop by for a conversation and to create something that expresses what you care about or your burning question.

Now available to the public, the Art Speaks Exhibit will remain open until June 15 – Mon. through Thurs. from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The viewing schedule is subject to change so you may want to call in advance. Contact Mary Ayres at 1-800-628-7722, ext. 3681 for complete details, a daily schedule of events, and guided tour information.
